The Advancement Project is calling for Virginia and the Justice Department to investigate whether the Mitt Romney campaign’s “interference” with the right to register to vote.

Romney’s campaign complained this week about the Voter Participation Center, which was sending out pre-populated voter registration forms, some of which were mistakenly sent to kids, pets and dead people.

“This is a backdoor effort by politicians to make voting harder, to intimidate voter registration groups and voters and illegally to purge recently registered voters from the rolls,” Advancement Project co-director Penda D. Hair said in a statement. “The Voter Participation Center is a well-respected, non-partisan, research driven organization dedicated to increasing democratic participation. The Voter Participation Center is making it easier to register to vote by getting registration applications in the hands of people who need them. They broke no laws.”
