Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), unsatisfied by recent Democratic attempts at legislation reforming the nation’s gun laws, is said to be crafting an alternative Republican bill that will drastically scale back on the goals of gun control advocates, Politico reported Thursday.
“Senator Grassley, along with other concerned members, is putting together an alternative bill that addresses gun violence in a manner that doesn’t violate the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens in contrast to what appears to be in the bill proposed by the majority leader,” said a spokesman for the ranking member on the Judiciary committee.
The bill may include more stringent penalties for “straw purchases” of guns and additional school-safety measures, but would exclude expanded background checks, and bans on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons.
