New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Thursday vetoed a bill backed by Democrats that would have allowed voters to submit ballots at polling places during a 15-day period prior to Election Day, the Star-Ledger reported.

Calling the proposed changes “hasty, counterproductive and less reliable” than the status quo, Christie said the bill would cost the state $23 million up front and $2 million annually.

His veto angered Democrats, who sought to make changes to the state’s voting laws after Hurricane Sandy damaged many New Jersey polling locations and hindered the ability of voters in the state just days before last year’s election.
