Gov. Chris Christie (R) said at a briefing that 2.4 million New Jersey households lacked power on Tuesday morning because of Superstorm Sandy, twice the number of households that were impacted by Hurricane Irene.

Christie said several towns along the Jersey shore were almost completely underwater. “The level of devestation at the Jersey shore is almost unthinkable,” Christie said. “It was beyond anything I ever thought I would see. Terrible.”

Christie said a full damage assessment will not be complete for 24 to 48 hours because of difficult weather conditions. He asked private employers to allow their employees to stay at home unless they could identify a safe route to work.
