New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Thursday clarified that he is personally opposed to “gay conversion therapy,” as Democrats in the state legislature push a bill to ban the controversial practice.
“Governor Christie does not believe in conversion therapy,” Christie’s spokesman Kevin Roberts said in a statement, according to the Star-Ledger. “There is no mistaking his point of view on this when you look at his own prior statements where he makes clear that people’s sexual orientation is determined at birth.”
At a news conference on Wednesday, Christie took a noncommittal position on the legislation, and Roberts did not say whether the popular governor would sign the bill if it ultimately made it to his desk.
The proposed bill would bar licensed counselors from utilizing the therapy on minors.
