New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) announced Thursday that he intends to appoint Attorney General Jeff Chiesa, a Republican, as interim senator to replace the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), who died on Monday. Chiesa’s appointment will be effective Monday, June 10.

“This is an incredible honor for me and my family,” Chiesa told reporters in Trenton. “I think the first thing we have to do is make sure the border is secure. From there, these issues are new to me.”

Chiesa will not seek the office in the state’s special Senate election, which will take place in October.
