G.M. projects that it will sell 2,500 of its Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid electric car by the end of August, making it the best-ever sales month for the model since it was introduced in December 2010, the Detroit Free Press reported (up from the previous record of 2,289 units in March).

The boost was helped in part due to a new lease deal for $249 a month and the fact that the Volt now qualifies for carpool lane status in California even when only the driver is inside, USA Today noted.

Not only that, but G.M. has sold 10,666 Volts in the first seven months of this year, a 272 percent increase from the first seven months of 2011 and a much higher volume than G.M.’s chief hybrid electric competitor in the U.S., the Nissan Leaf, which saw sales plummet 26.3 percent for the same period.

Still, the automaker won’t reach its original goal of 45,000 Chevy Volt sales by the year’s end, the Detroit Free Press reported.
