Fox News commentator Charles Krauthammer offered some rather frank advice for Donald Trump ahead of the next presidential debate: deny your own record.

The conservative pundit urged the Republican nominee to take a page from his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R), who refused to admit that Trump made certain inflammatory comments when Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) brought them up during this week’s vice presidential debate.

“I think he can hold his own,” Krauthammer said in a panel discussion that aired Thursday on Fox. “He just needs to be—to ignore, as everybody here has said—ignore the bait. He should just dismiss all the quotations that he hears, the way that Pence did. Deny it ever happened and then ignore the fact checkers the next day.”

While the press praised Pence’s calm demeanor during the vice presidential debate, he was widely criticized for openly refusing to cop to the offensive comments about immigrants and women that Trump has said on the record.

Krauthammer went on to advise Trump to show restraint in the aftermath of his face-off with Hillary Clinton, something he failed to manage in their first go-round.

“I think the most important thing here for Trump is the morning after,” Krauthammer said. “He might have lost the debate. It was pretty close. It was not the rout that people say it was. But he really threw it away the morning after when he went after—he went down the rabbit holes on the Miss Universe and all the other stuff. And that’s happened to him before.”

Trump’s best post-debate move, Krauthammer said, would be to ditch his cell phone “for at least a week” to keep himself from firing off offensive tweets sure to capture new headlines.
