Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson suggested last week that Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump was far from his first choice for the White House, but he needed to think of “the children.”
In an interview with a Denver radio station first flagged by Buzzfeed News, host Krista Kafer told Carson that she couldn’t stomach voting for Trump. Carson said he would agree with her if he didn’t worry so much about his grandchildren’s future under a potential President Hillary Clinton.
“For me, it’s about the children and the grandchildren,” Carson said. “If it was just me, I would be completely where Krista is. I would say, ‘Hey, I got this, I can deal with it,’ but for them, I can’t.”
When Kafer told Carson that she thought Trump was a “bad” person, Carson again defended the GOP frontrunner: “Who isn’t? Who among us isn’t?”
Carson said “pragmatism” led to his decision to endorse Trump last month because he didn’t think Ohio Gov. John Kasich or Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) could win against a Democrat.
“So in terms of who can potentially win, I think that would be Donald Trump,” Carson said. “When I look at the consequences of us not winning, it’s too horrible to even think about.
He later added that he would follow whichever Republican candidate emerges as the nominee in order to defeat the Democrat in a general election.
“We have to be willing, when we pray, to accept what God provides. I pray that God will save this nation whichever way he sees fit to do it and however he sees fit to do it I’m gonna be there,” he said. “So if it’s Trump, I’ll be there. If it’s Cruz, I’ll be there. Whoever it is, I’ll be there, because I recognize that not voting is the same as voting for the other side and I can’t do that to my grandchildren.”
