Donald Trump’s continuing double dip into birther conspiracy theories is giving the White House more oppurtunities to hammer Mitt Romney for choosing to stand with Trump. During the daily briefing with reporters Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney laid into Trump and Romney for the second day.

From a rush transcript:

REPORTER: I don’t know if you were watching cnn yesterday but Donald Trump was going at the issue. I wonder if there is reaction if this continues to be an issue in this campaign?

CARNEY: I think it’s up to — as i mentioned yesterday, those who seek the office decide how they will run their campaigns and what views they associate themselves with. As the president made clear in this briefing room when it became a ridiculous distraction last year, you know, the American people are concerned about real issues that confronts this nation. They are concerned principally with the fact that we are still not down the road to the final destination of full recovery from the worst recession since the great depression. Those are those things. Jobs, the economy, the security of the nation, the security of the American people that i think voters overwhelmingly care about. I think one man’s attempt to draw attention to himself by engaging in, you know, this kind of ridiculouess doesn’t really change what most Americans care about.

REPORTER: Do you think it’s a ridiculous distraction?

CARNEY: Well, I think so. Do you not?

REPORTER: I’m asking you.

CARNEY: I think it is. Yes.
