Cardinal Timothy Dolan called the contraception coverage mandate handed down by the administration in January as part of health care reform a “dramatic, radical” government intrusion into the Church. Appearing in an interview on CBS’s Face the Nation Sunday, Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, claimed that he and the Catholic Church didn’t pick this fight, but that it was foisted upon them.

“I don’t think religion should be too involved in politics, but I also don’t think the government and politics should be overly involved in the Church. That’s our problem here,” Dolan said. “You’ve got a dramatic, radical intrusion of a government bureaucracy into the internal life of the Church.”
