House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) on Friday joined a chorus of Republicans who have condemned Rep. Don Young (R-AK), the longtime Alaska congressman who casually referred to migrant workers as “wetbacks” during a radio interview.

“We are a welcoming and tolerant nation, and there is no excuse for this type of offensive language in public discourse,” Cantor said in a statement provided to The Hill.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) have also denounced Young’s remarks, made at a time when the GOP is trying desperately to improve its outreach to Latino voters.
