The British media regulator Ofcom on Thursday ruled that BSkyB is “fit and proper” to hold broadcasting licenses. The regulator, however, criticized James Murdoch, Sky’s former chairman, for his response to the phone-hacking scandal, The Guardian reports.

“We consider that James Murdoch’s failure to apprise himself of this information, given the information which he accepts he knew, fell short of the exercise of responsibility to be expected of the chief executive officer and the chairman,” Ofcom said in its report.

News Corp. owns a 39 percent stake in the BSkyB. In a statement, Sky responded to the ruling:

“Ofcom is right to conclude that Sky is a fit and proper broadcaster. As a company, we are committed to high standards of governance and we take our regulatory obligations extremely seriously. As Ofcom acknowledges, our track record of compliance in broadcasting is good.
