Republican Bradley Byrne cruised to a landslide victory over Democrat Burton LeFlore in a special election for Alabama’s first congressional district.

The Associated Press declared the former state senator the winner at about 9 p.m. ET Tuesday. Unofficial returns showed Byrne taking about two-thirds of the vote and carrying every county in the district, according to al.com.

Byrne’s triumph last month in the GOP primary against conservative activist Dean Young was viewed as a victory for business groups in the state and a loss for tea party groups.

“Alabama families know Bradley will work to reduce our country’s mounting debt, and will fight this Administration’s expensive, overreaching policies,” National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) said in a statement. “I congratulate him on his well-earned victory and look forward to working together in the halls of Congress.”
