Saying he’s hopeful that he’ll receive a “clear explanation,” House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) on Wednesday expressed skepticism that the Department of Justice had legitimate grounds to seize phone records from the Associated Press.

“Let me tell you I am very interested in and I’m hopeful that we’re gonna get a clear explanation for why such unprecedented action was taken,” Boehner said during a morning press conference. “It befuddles me that there could be some justification that would allow them to infringe on the First Amendment to the Constitution.”

Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday said that the DOJ was acting in the interest of national security when it subpoenaed the AP in pursuit of leaks related to a CIA operation in Yemen. Those leaks, Holder insisted, “put the American people at risk.”
