New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Friday that he will not endorse any of the candidates vying to succeed him.
Michael Barbaro of The New York Times tweeted the news and received confirmation from Bloomberg's deputy, Howard Wolfson, that the decision applies to both the primary and the general election:
Bloomberg appeared to offer an indirect endorsement of mayoral hopefuls Christine Quinn (D) and Joe Lhota (R) in an interview with New York magazine published this week. The mayor said he thought The New York Times got it right when the newspaper endorsed both Quinn and Lhota.
Quinn's mayoral candidacy came to an end Tuesday with a defeat in the primary, while Lhota won the GOP's nomination.
