New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s outside spending group is jumping into the Illinois congressional race to fill ex-Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s seat, running ads against the leading Democratic contender over her opposition to gun control laws, the group announced Tuesday.

The pro-gun Debbie Halvorson, a former congresswoman, has an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association but may win the Democratic nomination in a majority-black district of Chicago where gun violence is a problem. In the final month before the primary, Halvorson’s critics are turning to the issue of guns, Politico reported recently. Now, Bloomberg’s Independence USA PAC is joining the effort.

“In the race to replace Jessie Jackson, watch out for Debbie Halvorson,” a narrator in the ad says. “When she was in congress before, Halvorson got an A from the NRA.”

“Halvorson even co-sponsored a bill that would allow some criminals to carry loaded, hidden guns into Chicago,” the narrator continues. “Debbie Halvorson: when it comes to preventing gun violence, she gets an F.”
