Lawyers for Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson have sent a letter to Florida TV stations asking them not to air an attack ad from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce because of a false claim about the health care reform law, reports the Miami Herald.

The ad says health care reform, which Nelson voted for, cuts $500 billion from Medicare. But Nelson’s camp disputes that characterization, citing fact-checking sites Politifact and FactCheck.org, which explain that the $500 billion figure is a reduction in future growth, not immediate cuts. Medicare spending is actually still growing

The letter asks the TV stations not to air the ad out of a “duty to protect the public from the spread of false information and deliberate deception.”
