Jani Bergdahl, whose son Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was just released as a prisoner of war from the Taliban, read a letter to him at a press conference on Sunday.

Bergdahl’s parents have not yet communicated directly with him, but sent him their love through a statement to the media.

“We’ve been working very very hard for your release this last five years,” Jani Bergdahl read from the letter to her son, “never losing hope in you or for you.”

Both Bergdahl’s parents stressed that their son would need to go through a long recovery process.

“Give yourself all of the time you need to recover and decompress,” Jani Bergdahl said. “There is no hurry.”
