In the Wisconsin recall debate, the moderators asked Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett about the subject of same-sex marriage, noting that national opinions have evolved in the six years since Wisconsin voted to ban it. Have his own views evolved, and would he sign a civil unions bill if one were passed in the legislature?

It was not directly stated in the quesiton, but Barrett had opposed same-sex marriage in the past — in the 1990s, when he was in Congress, he voted for the Defense of Marriage Act.

“I believe in marriage equality,” said Barrett. “It is an issue where opinions have evolved. And for younger people in particular, they understand the need to respect relationships. I do respect them.”
