On Thursday a Bahrain appeals court sentenced nine medics for their involvement in an anti-government protest last year. Nine others were acquitted. In September a military court handed down prison sentences of five to 15 years to 20 Bahraini doctors, all Shi’ites. The court charged them with stealing medical equipment, occupying the capital’s main hospital, and allegedly plotting to topple the Bahraini government. Two of the medics sentenced in the first trial did not appeal the September verdicts and are believed to have fled the country. The case has been widely condemned. Tewfik Dhaif, 53, the uncle of two of the men sentenced on Thursday, called it “an unjust ruling”.”They should be trying the authorities, not these doctors,” he said.
