MSNBC has come under some criticism for hiring former White House aides David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs to serve as commentators. But Axelrod said in an interview published Thursday that he won’t be a surrogate for President Obama on the network.
“I’m proud of my work for and with the President. But in this role, I will offer observations based on my experience over 35 years in journalism and politics, and will call them as I see them,” Axelrod told CNN’s Howard Kurtz.
Gibbs, for his part, said he won’t be a cheerleader or spokesman for the President’s point of view. Gibbs, before joining President Obama’s re-election effort in Chicago, served as White House press secretary.
