David Axelrod defended Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s travel expenses for flying between Washington and his home in California, which have cost the government $860,000 since last July on CNN’s State of the Union.

“Leon’s family is out there, I understand that, he’s serving the country,” Axelrod said.

Host Candy Crowley pushed that people could get upset in tight government times.

“Understood,” said Axelrod, but Panetta is doing “a service to his country, at the age of 73, after a long career… I don’t think people are going to begrudge him going home and seeing his family.”
