Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) crossed the line when he said that President Barack Obama is beginning to rack up impeachable offenses, Obama’s former adviser David Axelrod said Friday.

Axelrod joked on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that Coburn’s professional experience helped the senator reach his conclusion.

“That was his considered legal opinion as an obstetrician,” Axelrod, now a contributor to MSNBC, said on the program.

Axelrod said that he found the sentiment particularly unfortunate coming from Coburn, who has spoken out against the quixotic effort by some GOP lawmakers to defund Obamacare and risk a government shutdown.

“But on this, I think he was way out of bounds and he speaks to a kind of virus that’s infected our politics that really has to be curbed,” Axelrod said.

Speaking at a town hall Wednesday in Muskogee, Okla., Coburn said he believes Obama is “getting perilously close.”
