An attempted assassination was caught on live television Saturday when a man jumped up on stage at a televised conference in Sofia, Bulgaria and pointed a gun at a Bulgarian politician in an apparent attempt to shoot him from point-blank range, Reuters reports.

Ahmed Dogan, the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), a liberal party representing ethnic Turks and other Muslims, escaped unscathed when the firearm apparently misfired, according to the BBC. The disturbing video shows other men at the conference storming the stage and beating the assailant. Police arrested the 25-year old attacker.
