A White House official told the Associated Press Monday that it thwarted a realtively routine “spear phishing” cyber attack on one of its computers. A “spear phishing” attack refers to one in which an email or message is sent to a specific target or targets attempting to get them to divulge sensitive information such as passwords and login details that can be used to compromise or take over the target’s computer or other related systems the target may have access to. Fox News reported Monday the attack in question was Chinese in origin.
