The evangelical organization Focus on the Family is sending out an anti-Obama direct mail piece in Iowa that quotes President Obama as saying, “whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation,” reports CNN.
The mailer compares Obama and Mitt Romney on social issues including abortion and same-sex marriage. The brochure also mentions the contraception coverage rule in Obamacare, saying that Obama violates religious freedom by forcing “employers to pay for abortion-inducing drugs against their consciences and religious beliefs.”
As CNN points out, the quote is misleading. It comes from a 2006 speech in which Obama said: “Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation – at least, not just. We are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, and a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.”
