Recent assaults on female protesters in Tahrir Square have led a human rights group to call for an investigation. On Friday a group of women protesting sexual harrassment in Egypt were reportedly groped by a mob of men who tried to rip off their clothes.

Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa, condemned the attack. “These forms of sexual harassment, sexual assault and other forms of ill-treatment against women protesters are an attempt to intimidate them and prevent them from participating fully in public life,” she said. According to Amnesty, prior assaults on women protesters have not been investigated.
