Amazon breaks even on sales of its new Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Paperwhite devices, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told the BBC as the company expands its Kindle line and Kindle Owners’ Lending Library to the UK, Germany and France. Bezos further explained the approach, which is opposite that off the high profit margins Apple enjoys off its devices:

“We want to make money when people use our devices, not when people buy our devices,” he told the BBC…”What we find is that when people buy a Kindle they read four times as much as they did before they bought the Kindle. But they don’t stop buying paper books. Kindle owners read four times as much, but they continue to buy both types of books.”
