Stephen Colbert couldn’t believe that his sister, Democratic businesswoman Elizabeth Colbert Busch, fell to former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) in a special U.S. House election.

In fact, the comedian was certain that his sister won “because CNN called it for Sanford.”

But on Wednesday, the host of the Colbert Report resigned himself to the results of the race — and responded by turning his back on South Carolina. Colbert said he will now abandon his native Palmetto State in favor of its rival to the north.

“From now on — and I never thought I would ever say this — I am from North Carolina,” Colbert declared. “No, I have to! I have to! I’m a Tar Heel now. Whatever the fuck that means.”
