A 9-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot in the chest in Chicago’s South Side, the Chicago Tribune reports. The boy was in a car driven by his mother when five gun shots were heard Wednesday evening. Police believe the gunman was aiming for the mother’s boyfriend, who was also in the car.

The boy reportedly shouted “Mommy, I’m shot.” The boyfriend fled the car, and the mother continued driving straight to a nearby children’s hospital.

The boy was among 11 people shot within eight hours in Chicago on Wednesday, the Tribune notes. Of those shot, a 15-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were killed.
