The 8-year-old boy who fatally shot his elderly caregiver last week in Louisiana reportedly played a violent video game moments before the shooting, according to The Advocate of Baton Rouge, La.

Investigators said minutes before the boy fired a single shot at 87-year-old Marie Smothers with a Colt .38-caliber Detective Special revolver, he was playing a version of “Grand Theft Auto.” The gun is believed to have belonged to Smothers.

According to The Advocate, investigators “cannot say for certain that the video game triggered the boy’s violent action but they are pursuing that line of inquiry.”
