In contrast, 18 percent of nonveteran Americans said they new a victim of sexual assault, according to a separate poll. And 17 percent of nonveteran women said they knew a victim, showing an even sharper contrast between veterans and nonveterans.

Gallup surveyed 1,268 veterans via phone June 16-20 with a margin of error plus or minus three percentage points.

For the nonveteran poll, Gallup surveyed 1,016 adults via phone July 2-3 with a margin of error plus or minus four percentage points.
