A Fourth of July fireworks show in Simi Valley, Calif. went awry after a huge explosion left dozens of people injured, NBC Los Angeles reported.

The display lasted only a few minutes before the explosion — what authorities described as a “fireworks mishap” — sent spectators running for cover. Twenty-eight people suffered injuries, 20 of whom were sent to the hospital for treatment. Among the 20 people who were hospitalized, 16 sustained minor injuries and four suffered moderate to severe injuries. According to NBC Los Angeles, eight individuals were treated and released on the scene.
