Job Announcement
Associate Editor
TPMCafe.com
Job Details
A full-time job, with a modest, but livable salary.
Most, if not all, of the work will be done remotely, by phone and email. So applications are welcome from across the country. But there will be a strong preference for applicants living in or willing to relocate to the New York City area.
Why You Might Want This Job …
You'll get lots of valuable, on-the-job experience that will prepare you for a career in political journalism, online publishing or politics --- perhaps a mix of all three.
You'll report. You'll research. You'll write. You'll work directly with the site's publisher as well as its contributors.
What You'll Do …
Short Version: Half of the work will be mundane and time-consuming work moderating and helping run TPMCafe; the other half will be challenging and exciting research, reporting and writing for the site.
Somewhat Longer Version: The Associate Editor's responsibilities will be a mix of 1) editing and overseeing TPMCafe and 2) researching, reporting and writing content that will appear on TPMCafe. The first category will include a range of daily tasks including monitoring the site's discussion areas, assisting site contributors, fielding emails from readers and handling various other duties related to the day-to-day functioning of the site. The Associate Editor will also do similar work, on an as-needed basis, for the Talking Points Memo website. The second category will include research and reporting for both TPMCafe and Talking Points Memo, and writing original, bylined content appearing at TPMCafe.
Who We're Looking For …
Applicants must be highly reliable and able to work productively and conscientiously without direct day-to-day oversight. They should have a strong interest in political journalism and/or political activism and have a demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely.
Applicants should have a basic familiarity with web design and site management as well as a willingness and ability to come up to speed quickly on the site management software used for TPMCafe.
Experience with graphic design, site management and web server software is a plus, but not required.
What You Need to Apply ...
A resume, a letter explaining your goals and interest in the job, and two letters of recommendation by people in a position to evaluate your qualifications for this job.
The job is available immediately and we're looking to hire someone in the very near future. So applications will be evaluated as they're received. Since letters of recommendation usually take longer, applicants are welcome to submit their résumé and letter in advance of their letters of recommendation.
All correspondence should be by email, include the subject line "TPMCafe Job" and be sent to talk@talkingpointsmemo.com.
