The line between Stephen Colbert the late-night comedian and Colbert the pseudo-presidential candidate got a bit blurrier Friday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Colbert stopped by the early morning news show’s South Carolina set to offer praise to Herman Cain — Colbert’s “main man with the tax plan” — and talk about his exploratory committee for president of the “United States of South Carolina.”

Colbert slipped in and out of character. At one point he praised “open marriages” a la Newt Gingrich’s ex-wife’s recent tell-all interview. What’s the best way to broach that topic with one’s spouse, Colbert was asked.

“Honey, I’d like to bang someone new,” Colbert answered. “Here’s the thing I don’t think Newt Gingrich gets credit for: a lot of politicians screw around on their wives, but he was enough of a gentleman to ask permission first. That’s a southern gentleman.”

The next moment, Colbert was speaking openly and passionately about his home state of South Carolina. And finally, Colbert teased an upcoming rally he will hold with Herman Cain Friday at 1 p.m. “History will be made,” Colbert said. How so? With “clapping and talking” and television cameras, of course.
