The Republican Party is responding to President Obama’s new deficit reduction plan exactly as he thought they might, Obama told attendees at a high-dollar DNC fundraiser last night. And by dismissing his plan as “class warfare,” Obama said the GOP is showing its willingness to take the country right to the edge of financial ruin rather than accept anything that looks like a tax hike.

“You’re already hearing the moans and groans from the other side about how we are engaging in class warfare and we’re being too populist and this and that and the other — all the usual scripts,” Obama told a crowd of rich donors in New York City Tuesday. “I mean, it’s predictable, the news releases that come out from the other side.”

Obama said the wealthy donors helping along the other side would be wise to follow his lead, rather than try to spark a populist war.

“The truth of the matter is, is that if we don’t succeed, then I think that this country is going to go down a very perilous path. And it’s not going to be good for those of us who have done incredibly well in this society and it’s certainly not going to be good for the single mom who’s working two shifts right now trying to support her family,” Obama said. “It’s not going to be good for anybody.”
