Newt Gingrich is telling reporters not to expect a counterattack to the Romney campaign’s epic onslaught of attack. After all, staying positive has gotten him this far.

“My only observation,” he told the National Journal on Thursday, “is every time these guys have attacked each other, they’ve gone down. So I don’t know that being the attack dog in the Republican Party is necessarily an asset, you know a big asset. It’s not a game I’m going to play.”

One of the big factors behind Newt Gingrich’s surprise surge has been his decision to (mostly) refrain from criticizing his rivals in debates, even going so far as accusing moderators of trying to intentionally divide and weaken the field. Gingrich stressed on Thursday that he wouldn’t deviate from the script in the face of Romney’s new approach, saying “If Mr. Romney goes on the attack, which is his prerogative – everybody should run the campaign that they’re comfortable with – my answers will be positive.”

“Callista and I like Mitt and Anne,” Gingrich said. “They have a good story to tell. He would be a fine nominee for this party and I would support him for the nominee of this party, so I think a positive ad that describes his life is terrific. We’ll do positive ads that describe us. People get to choose between the positives.”

Notably, however, Gingrich took a couple of light jabs at Romney in the same interview, challenging him to release more details on his immigration and health care proposals instead of a “secret plan” to be revealed later.
