If Newt Gingrich wants to play down accusations that he is “grandiose,” calling for a permanent, American moon base might not be the best approach, Jon Stewart said on Thursday.
Stewart is referring to a speech Gingrich made earlier this week, promising a lunar base by the end of his second term. “What, did you start with Death Star and you got kind of reined in?” Stewart said.
Gingrich floated the idea that if, say, 13,000 people live on the moon, they could petition for statehood. But, Stewart, reminded, didn’t Gingrich call a similar effort to make Washington, D.C. a state “crazy”?
Gingrich really just wants to be a condo developer on the moon, Stewart said. A lunar Donald Trump, if you will. And like that Earth Trump, Gingrich isn’t going to be president either, Stewart said. But maybe it’s not about statehood at all.
“Newt Gingrich did that global warming ad with Nancy Pelosi, realized that the Earth is very sick, and now he wants to leave it for a younger planet.”
