So a guy stands up on behalf of Rick Perry and tells a bunch of reporters that Mitt Romney is in a cult Friday. He also tells reporters that Perry personally welcomed the endorsement, which he certainly seemed to on stage at VVS. Team Perry doesn’t entirely reject the guy but does reject the view that Mormonism is a cult.
Pretty great stuff if you’re a guy running against Perry, right? Not if you’re Herman Cain — he’d rather not talk about it.
“No comment. No comment,” Cain told CNN Friday. “Some people feel that way. You know, I respect everybody’s, you know, religious beliefs and Mormonism’s been around a long time. No comment. Not going to get into that.”
“I don’t think it’s appropriate to say, but he said it,” Cain added. “Okay? He said it, but I don’t want to get into it. I want to focus on growing the economy. Creating jobs.”
So: calling Mormonism a cult is not a nice thing to do, says Cain. But he’d really rather not discuss it.
