Newt Gingrich is up, Mitt Romney is down, and who do the Republican presidential candidates have to thank? A certain billionaire businessman believes he deserves that honor.

Donald Trump phoned into Fox and Friends for his regular Monday morning chinwag, saying Mitt Romney’s numbers have plummeted since he denied The Donald’s debate.

“His numbers have gone down very substantially since he said no,” Trump said. “And a lot of people think it’s because it showed a lack of decisiveness or a lack of courage going into this debate.”

So surely Romney’s loss is Gingrich’s gain. It’s all coming together!

“And you look at what happened with Newt,” Trump said. “Newt has gone up like a rocket ship. I respect that.”

Trump’s debate has not achieved similar flight since it was announced a little more than a week ago. Only Rick Santorum and Gingrich have agreed to participate. Trump — and the debate’s sponsor, the conservative news site Newsmax — insist the debate is still on. But Trump told Fox that it might just be he and Gingrich. “We may just do a chat,” he said.
