As I wrote earlier, we’re going to make the nationwide crackdown on voting one of the centerpieces of our 2012 campaign coverage. And here’s a small but very illustrative part of the story. The new voting crackdown law in Florida is so restrictive that even the League of Women Voters (about as old-line, mainstream and establishment a group as you can get) has dropped its voter registration plans in the state.

As Deirdre MacNabb, president of the Florida League of Women Voters, told TPM in a phone interview this week: “when we looked at the laws, we felt that this would put our thousands of volunteers across the state who have registered voters for 70 years in Florida at a grave disadvantage.”
