Sen. Michael Crapo (R-ID) was arrested last night just after midnight in Alexandria, Virginia for driving under the influence. According to police statements to CBS news, Patch and WTOP, Crapo failed multiple field sobriety tests and was arrested without incident.

Alexandria police stopped Crapo after he ran a red light.

Apology statement after the jump.

Late Update: Crapo’s office releases statement

“I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance,” Crapo said. “I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter.

“I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.”

An additional potential political complication: Crapo is he is a Mormon from a state with a large Mormon population. And in line with the dictates of the Mormon religion, he professes not to drink alcohol.
