Hunter Walker wrote for us last month about the possibility of a close finish in the Democratic primary for NYC mayor and the legal and political chaos likely to follow — which is about where we are today.
To pinpoint the issue: Bill de Blasio has just enough votes right now to avoid a runoff. But just barely. And there are, according to the AP, some 30,000 absentee, provisional, and other ballots remaining to be counted. Plus a mandated recount of all the ballots.
All of this to determine whether de Blasio has to go through a runoff three weeks from now, on Oct. 1, or can move straight to the general election Nov. 5, in which he is expected to defeat Republican nominee Joe Lhota handily.
