Yesterday, I discussed the new poll that shows that New Yorkers overwhelmingly oppose police officers turning their backs on Mayor de Blasio during police funerals. They also think police union chief Pat Lynch is a jerk who’s bad for the city. Now the same pollster (Quinnipiac) has released numbers for the Mayor and the Governor.

To be clear, these are the numbers for de Blasio and Cuomo in New York City.

de Blasio is doing reasonably well. He’s at 49% approval, 40% disapproving. But Governor Andrew Cuomohas a mind-bogglingly high 71% rating in the city.

I suspect there’s some inflation of that number, based on sympathy and nostalgia tied to the recent death of Cuomo’s father, former Governor Mario Cuomo. But 71% is amazingly high. Liberals at best tolerate Cuomo. And he got a serious run for his money in the Democratic primary. But he’s just really, really popular. And New York City is where most of the state’s liberals are concentrated. Notably Cuomo has a one point higher approval rating than de Blasio.

Again, these aren’t bad numbers for de Blasio. He’s doing okay at worst. But Cuomo, it’s like he could be governor forever.
