Wisconsin state Sen. Dan Kapanke, one of the Republicans being targeted for recall in the wake of Gov. Scott Walker’s new law curtailing public employee unions, is actively gearing up for the possible campaign, the La Crosse Tribune reports.

“I’d just as soon not be here today, but we have to,” Kapanke said, speaking to supporters Saturday at a newly-opened GOP campaign office operated by the La Crosse County Republican Party. “If we’re not going to balance the budget now, when?”

He also added: “I love campaigns. I just didn’t think I’d do one every year.”

In addition, Kapanke strongly stood by Walker, whose low very low approval ratings and voter backlash the union bill are fueling the recalls.

In addition, Kapanke told the Republican audience that he has taken solace in religion — and declared to the crowd that Walker does likewise:

“I’m not ashamed to tell you I’ve read the Bible more than I ever have,” Kapanke said.

“Awesome,” a woman in the crowd said.

“So have we,” said another man.

Kapanke shared a story of meeting one-on-one with Walker, who he said had a book about leadership through the Bible.

“How can you go wrong following a leader that obviously gets his mission on this earth?” Kapanke asked.
