Obama: I’ll Be Unveiling Additional Ideas On Economy In The Coming Days
In this weekend’s YouTube address, President Obama discussed the positive trends in the economy, but also said there remains more work to be done. “In the coming days, I’ll be unveiling additional ideas aimed at accelerating job growth and hiring as we emerge from this economic storm,” said Obama.
“And so that we don’t face another crisis like this again, I’m determined to meet our responsibility to do what we know will strengthen our economy in the long-run,” he explained. “That’s why I’m not going to let up in my efforts to reform our health care system; to give our children the best education in the world; to promote the jobs of tomorrow and energy independence by investing in a clean energy economy; and to deal with the mounting federal debt.”
Fiorina Slams Mammogram Recommendation: ‘Will A Bureaucrat Determine That My Life Isn’t Worth Saving?’
This weekend’s Republican address was delivered by former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, a candidate for Senate in California. Fiorina, who has won the GOP establishment’s support in her primary against state Rep. Chuck DeVore, discusses her own battle with breast cancer, and slammed the recent government panel recommendation that women under 50 not get regular mammograms:
“As it turned out, costs were a significant factor in this recommendation. Will a bureaucrat determine that my life isn’t worth saving?” said Fiorina. “All this takes on even greater urgency in the midst of the ongoing health care debate in Washington. We wonder if we are heading down a path where the federal government will at first suggest and then mandate new standards for prevention and treatment. Do we really want government bureaucrats rather than doctors dictating how we prevent and treat something like breast cancer?”
Baucus Nominated Girlfriend For U.S. Attorney
Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) recommended his girlfriend Melodee Hanes, a former staffer, to the Obama administration to serve as U.S. Attorney earlier this year. Hanes later withdrew. Baucus spokesman Ty Matsdorf said that Baucus’ romantic involvement with Hanes had nothing to do with his recommendation of her to be U.S. Attorney: “Senator Baucus recommended each of the three candidates based solely on qualifications, and merit, knowing whichever one the White House selected would serve Montana well.”
Barney Frank Endorses Sestak For Senate Against Specter
Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) is endorsing Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA) for Senate — the first sitting member of Congress other than Sestak himself to do so — in his Democratic primary challenge against Sen. Arlen Specter, who switched from the Republicans to the Dems earlier this year. “No one calls it like they see it quite like Barney Frank,” Sestak said in a statement provided to Salon. “He’s not willing to let Senator Specter get away with running from his record as a loyal Bush Republican. Just like Barney and I, Pennsylvanians won’t be fooled by election year conversions.”
CBO: Financial Overhaul Would Add $4.5 Billion To Deficit Over Ten Years
The Congressional Budget Office announced late on Friday that the House bill to crack down on Wall Street and revamp the financial markets, which is expected to pass next week, would increase the deficit by $4.5 billion over the next ten years. The bill would increase revenues by $4.9 billion, through various fees, and would increase spending by $9.5 billion.
Pelosi Invokes Truman’s Struggles For Universal Health Care
Speaking at the Orange County (California) Democratic Party’s Harry S. Truman Awards Dinner, Speaker Nancy Pelosi discussed how the late president’s opponents denounced his universal health care proposals as “socialism” and even “communism.” “Sound familiar?” said Pelosi. “But that was then and this is now, and we will have health insurance for all. Every day brings us closer to that dream.”
Hillary Clinton: ‘It’s Daunting’ To Plan A Wedding
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said it is “daunting” to plan her daughter Chelsea’s upcoming wedding. “For me, [it’s] particularly an extraordinary moment to see how happy my daughter is and to have a wonderful man that will become my son-in-law. But it’s daunting to try and plan a wedding,” said Clinton. She added that she’s been offered from advice from one of her predecessors, former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, on juggling the duties of office and being a mother of the bride.
