GM Declares Bankruptcy; Government To Have Majority Share
General Motors has filed for bankruptcy as part of a government-led reorganization. The federal government will provide an additional $30 billion in aid — and will have a majority share in the company of 60%. The plan is for GM to emerge from the bankruptcy within 60-90 days with a smaller work force, fewer plants and a reduced number of dealerships.

Obama’s Day Ahead
President Obama will be speaking at 11:55 a.m. ET, on the General Motors bankruptcy deal. At 1:20 p.m. ET, he will visit the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. At 4:45 p.m. ET, he will meet with the National Economic Council staff.

Biden’s Day Ahead
Vice President Biden and his wife Jill are in New York City today. Joe Biden will attend a Democratic National Committee event. Jill Biden will speak at the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Respect Awards.

The Minnesota Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments at 10 a.m. ET today in Norm Coleman’s appeal of his loss in the Minnesota Senate trial, as the state enters its sixth month without a second U.S. Senator. Check out The Uptake for a live video feed.

Sotomayor To Meet With Senators this Week
Sonia Sotomayor is set to tour Capitol Hill this week, making the case for her nomination to Senators in personal meetings. On the itinerary this week are reportedly meetings with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and potentially Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), plus Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Ranking Member Jeff Sessions (R-AL).

NYT: Sotomayor Could Find Votes In GOP
The New York Times says that despite apparent public controversies, Sonia Sotomayor can probably count on being confirmed with no consequential Republican opposition. “Notwithstanding fierce criticism from the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich, there is scant evidence of solid opposition from Republican senators,” the Times says. “Indeed, strategists on both sides say that one-third or more of the 40 Senate Republicans may vote to confirm her.”

Geithner Tells China: U.S. Deficit Will Come Down
Speaking to students at Peking University, Sec. of the Treasury Tim Geithner sought to reassure the international community on the issue of America’s budget deficit. “As we recover from this unprecedented crisis, we will cut our fiscal deficit,” said Geithner, “we will eliminate the extraordinary government support that we have put in place to overcome the crisis.”
