Obama To Take GOP To Task On Economy, Tax Cuts
The Associated Press reports on President Obama’s upcoming press conference today: “Striving to gain the upper hand on a crucial political issue, President Barack Obama is faulting Republicans for refusing to help him turn around the sluggish economy or support some proposed new tax breaks for businesses that the GOP has backed in the past. Obama has argued that case many times recently. But on Friday he takes it to an audience of millions, including many who will vote in November’s decisive congressional elections, during a nationally televised news conference from the White House East Room.”

Obama’s Day Ahead
President Obama will receive the presidential daily briefing at 9:30 a.m. ET. He will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. ET. He will then meet with senior advisers at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Biden’s Day Ahead
Vice President Biden will meet in the morning and afternoon with senior advisers at the White House. Later, the Vice President and his wife Dr. Jill Biden will travel to New York City. There are no public events scheduled.

Obama To Name Goolsbee To Head Economic Council
Reuters reports: “President Barack Obama has chosen Austan Goolsbee as the new head of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, U.S. administration officials said on Thursday, promoting a longtime adviser from his inner policy circle. The announcement will ensure continuity within Obama’s economic team at an important time as the president tries to lift the faltering economy, and as speculation swirls around the future of other senior White House players, particularly the president’s chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. Obama is to announce his pick to replace Christina Romer as chair of the CEA at a White House news conference planned for 11:00 a.m. Eastern time (1500 GMT) on Friday.”

Parties Engage In Game of Ad Buy Chicken
CQ reports: “In the next 52 days, the parties will be strategically moving money among states, with Democrats facing the more difficult prospect of determining whether or when to cut off funding in races where incumbents are involved. The NRSC is likely to follow suit behind Democrats in states where they pull money out.”

Lobbyists Rush to Hire GOP Staff Ahead Of Election
The New York Times: “With Democrats in danger of losing control of Congress, some prominent lobbying shops, trade groups and contractors are already moving to bring more Republicans on board to bolster their political fortunes. Lobbyists, political consultants and recruiters all say that the going rate for Republicans — particularly current and former House staff members — has risen significantly in just the last few weeks, with salaries beginning at $300,000 and going as high as $1 million for private sector positions. ‘We’re seeing a premium for Republicans,’ said Ivan H. Adler, a headhunter for the McCormick Group in Washington who specializes in placing lobbyists. ‘They’re the new ‘It’ girl.'”
