Dallas Tea Party leader Phillip Dennis became the latest conservative figure to express doubts about whether President Obama is a Christian or a Muslim on Hardball yesterday.

“Is Barack Obama a Muslim?” asked host Chris Matthews.

Dennis’ answer: “I don’t know.”

In response to Matthews’ disbelief, Dennis added, “If he’s a Christian, I certainly don’t like the brand of Christianity he went to in Chicago for 20 years.”

Dennis’ eye-raising comments come after an Iowa GOP focus group led by Frank Luntz and featured on Sean Hannity’s show earlier this week highlighted the continuing belief among some Republicans that President Obama is a Muslim. Dennis felt those incredulous individuals were justified to question the President’s faith.

“I have a big problem with Islam, it’s calls the religion of peace when it’s anything but,” said the Dallas tea party leader. “And I think those people have a right. Certainly it’s understandable that they have a problem that our President might be Muslim.”

It isn’t the first time that Dennis made a notable appearance on Hardball. Just last month, he sparred with Matthews, telling him “You fear the tea party.”
